Sri Lanka Beaches: A Complete Coast-by-Coast Guide

Sri Lanka Beaches: A Complete Coast-by-Coast Guide

Sri Lanka's coastline runs the full range — surf towns, quiet coves, whale-watching bays, and long stretches of near-empty sand — but which beach is "best" depends entirely on which coast you're on and when you're visiting. Because the island's monsoons hit opposite sides at opposite times of year, choosing the right coast for your travel dates matters more than any single ranked list.

Sri Lanka's south and west coasts are driest from December to March. The east coast flips the calendar, with its best weather running roughly May to September. Keep this in mind as you plan — see our full guide on the best time to visit Sri Lanka for the details.

South & West Coast (Best December–March)

The most developed, most easily accessible stretch of coastline from Colombo, and the default choice for most first-time visitors.

Mirissa

Sri Lanka's best-known base for blue whale watching, with a small, laid-back bay backed by palm trees. See our full Mirissa guide.

Unawatuna

A family-friendly bay protected by an offshore reef, with the famous Dalawella rope swing nearby. See our full Unawatuna guide.

Hikkaduwa

Home to Sri Lanka's first marine national park, with a shallow, accessible coral reef right off the main beach. See our full Hikkaduwa coral reef guide.

Bentota

Geared toward water sports and upscale resorts, with a tranquil lagoon at its northern end well suited to kayaking, and mangrove boat trips further inland where crocodiles, monitor lizards, and kingfishers are commonly spotted.

Weligama

A long, wide bay popular with beginner surfers, and famous for its traditional stilt fishermen perched just offshore.

Hiriketiya

A smaller, horseshoe-shaped bay flanked by jungle headlands, popular with surfers and yoga travelers looking for a quieter alternative to the bigger southern towns.

Tangalle

A dramatic, less developed stretch of coastline with long, sometimes near-empty beaches. Good snorkeling in Tangalle Lagoon, with Bundala National Park and turtle nesting beaches close by — see our guide on turtle beaches in Sri Lanka. Note that some sections have strong currents, so choose swimming spots with care.

East Coast (Best May–September)

While the southwest is deep in its rainy season, the east coast is at its driest and sunniest — generally quieter, less commercially developed, and known for wider, less crowded beaches.

Arugam Bay

Sri Lanka's premier surf town, with famously named breaks like Whiskey Point and Crocodile Rock. The surf season generally runs April to September. Beyond the waves, nearby lagoons offer birdwatching and crocodile sightings, and Kumana National Park is a short drive away for those hoping to spot elephants.

Nilaveli

Widely considered one of the cleanest, most tranquil beaches in the country — soft white sand, shallow coral reefs good for snorkeling, and Pigeon Island Marine National Park just offshore.

Trincomalee & Uppuveli

A natural deep-water harbor city with its own beaches and the historic Koneswaram Temple; Uppuveli sits just north with a livelier, but still relaxed, beach scene.

Pasikudah

Known for unusually calm, shallow water extending far offshore, making it one of the safest swimming beaches on the island — well suited to families.

North (Jaffna Region)

Casuarina Beach

A shallow, less-developed beach near Jaffna, not typically part of a first-time itinerary but worth the detour if you're already exploring the north — see our guide to Mannar for more on this less-visited part of the island.

Choosing the Right Beach for You

  • Whale watching: Mirissa, November to April
  • Surfing: Arugam Bay (east, April–September) or Weligama and Hiriketiya (south, year-round beginner-friendly breaks)
  • Snorkeling and reefs: Hikkaduwa and Nilaveli, both with protected marine areas
  • Families: Unawatuna, Pasikudah, and Bentota, all known for calmer swimming conditions
  • Quiet and secluded: Hiriketiya, Tangalle, and Nilaveli
  • Nightlife and resorts: Bentota and Mirissa, both well set up for a livelier stay

Getting Between Them

Because Sri Lanka's coastline stretches so far in both directions, a self-drive rental is by far the easiest way to combine several beaches into one trip, rather than relying on buses or trains for each leg. The south coast beaches in particular string together naturally along the Southern Expressway — see our guide to popular destinations around Sri Lanka for route ideas.

Final Thoughts

Sri Lanka's beaches offer far more variety than a single "best beach" list can capture — surf towns, sheltered family bays, reef snorkeling, and quiet coves all exist within a few hours of each other. Pick your coast based on the season, and you'll find good weather and the right kind of beach somewhere on the island almost any time of year.
