The Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) has issued a statement outlining the official process for foreign nationals who wish to drive three-wheelers (commonly known as tuk-tuks) in Sri Lanka. According to the notice, foreigners must obtain a temporary driving licence through the proper legal channels.
Commissioner of Motor Transport (Control), D.P.C. Udaya Kumara, explained that to qualify for this licence, foreign applicants must complete both a written examination and practical training conducted in Sri Lanka.
His comments were made in response to a request under the Right to Information Act No. 12 of 2016.
Kumara also emphasized that no other organisation or service provider has been authorised by the Department to issue or assist in obtaining tuk-tuk driving licences for foreigners.
This clarification serves as a caution to tourists and foreign residents to steer clear of unofficial or informal services claiming to provide such licences.
