Things to Do in Nuwara Eliya: Activities and Experiences

Beyond its lakes, gardens, and colonial landmarks, Nuwara Eliya is a genuinely hands-on destination — a place built for slow mornings, cool-climate hobbies, and activities you won't find anywhere else in Sri Lanka. If you've already read our guide to places to visit in Nuwara Eliya, here's the flip side: what to actually do once you're there.

Play a Round at a 19th-Century Golf Course

The Nuwara Eliya Golf Club, founded in 1889 by a Scottish soldier for British servicemen, is one of the oldest golf clubs in Asia. Today it's a working 18-hole course with over 2,000 members, open to visitors for a round amid misty fairways, tall trees, and colonial-era clubhouse architecture. Even non-golfers often stop by simply to take in the setting from the clubhouse restaurant or a nearby café.

Get on the Water at Gregory Lake

Gregory Lake is Nuwara Eliya's activity hub, offering far more than a scenic walk. Rent a pedal boat, a swan-shaped paddleboat, or a speedboat for a spin around the lake, or try jet-skiing if you're after something faster. Cycling and horseback riding are also available along the lakeside paths, and hiring a private two-seater boat is a popular choice for couples wanting a quieter moment on the water.

Pick Your Own Strawberries

Nuwara Eliya's cool climate makes it Sri Lanka's strawberry capital, and several farms on the outskirts of town — including Adma Agro Farm and Jagro (Simply Strawberries) — let visitors walk through the beds, pick fresh fruit, and finish with a strawberry milkshake, dessert, or jam at the farm café. Peak strawberry season runs roughly from February to April, though most farms operate for visitors year-round.

Tour a Working Tea Factory

A trip to Ceylon tea country wouldn't be complete without seeing production up close. Pedro Tea Estate and the Mackwoods Labookellie Tea Centre are among the most visited, offering free factory tours through the withering, rolling, and drying process, followed by a tasting — a genuinely informative stop even if you're not a dedicated tea drinker.

Watch (or Join) Horse Racing Season

The Nuwara Eliya Racecourse, built in 1840 and sitting at roughly 1,868 meters above sea level, is the only horse racing venue left in Sri Lanka and one of the highest in the world. Major races are held during the April "Nuwara Eliya Season," drawing crowds reminiscent of England's Ascot. Outside race days, casual pony rides are available for a small fee.

Responsible travel note: some visitors choose to skip pony and horse rides here out of concern for animal welfare, opting instead to simply watch the racecourse and its surroundings.

Wander Victoria Park

Established to mark Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, this central park is best enjoyed simply strolling its flower beds and birdwatching, particularly vivid during its March–May and August–September blooming seasons. A small museum inside the park displays photographs of Nuwara Eliya spanning more than a century.

Chase Waterfalls

St. Clair's Falls, nicknamed the "Little Niagara of Sri Lanka," and Ramboda Falls are both within easy reach of town and worth building into a half-day loop. Early morning or late afternoon visits tend to be quieter and cooler for photography.

Settle Into a Cold-Weather Evening

Nuwara Eliya is one of the few places in Sri Lanka where evenings genuinely turn cold — temperatures can drop close to freezing on winter nights. Many guesthouses and hotels lean into this with fireplaces and heated lounges, making a slow evening with tea, a book, or quiet conversation one of the town's understated highlights.

Sample the Local Food Scene

The cool climate supports produce you won't find growing elsewhere on the island — fresh strawberries and cream, and locally grown European vegetables both feature heavily on menus. The Grand Hotel's dining room is well known for high tea, while Hela Bojun Hala, a food court run by local women, offers affordable, authentic Sri Lankan snacks and meals.

Day Trip to Horton Plains

For a more active day, Horton Plains National Park and the World's End viewpoint are within reach of Nuwara Eliya, offering one of Sri Lanka's most rewarding hikes through high-altitude cloud forest.

Getting Around for These Activities

Many of these experiences — the strawberry farms, tea estates, and waterfalls in particular — sit a short drive outside the town center rather than within easy walking distance. A self-drive rental makes it far easier to string several together in a single day without arranging separate tuk-tuk trips for each stop. See our guide to important tourist places in Sri Lanka for how Nuwara Eliya fits into a broader hill country itinerary.

Final Thoughts

Nuwara Eliya rewards travelers who slow down and actually do things, not just see them — a round of golf, a boat ride, a strawberry farm visit, and a cold evening by the fire add up to a distinctly different pace than the rest of Sri Lanka. Pair a few of these experiences together, and you'll come away with more than just photos of Little England.
