Ohiya: The Gateway to Horton Plains and World's End

Ohiya: The Gateway to Horton Plains and World's End

Ohiya isn't really a town โ€” it's a remote railway station, a handful of small shops, and not much else, tucked into the misty upper reaches of Sri Lanka's hill country. But that remoteness is exactly the point. Ohiya sits closer to Horton Plains National Park than any other settlement, making it the most convenient starting point for one of Sri Lanka's most famous hikes: the walk to World's End.

One of the Highest Points on the Railway

Ohiya Railway Station sits at roughly 1,774 meters (5,820 feet) above sea level, making it the third-highest railway station in Sri Lanka. It's the 67th stop on the Main Line connecting Colombo and Badulla, a route built during the British colonial period to move tea and other goods down from the hill country to the coast. The station itself retains its original colonial-era architecture, largely unchanged since it opened in 1893.

The train journey to Ohiya, particularly the stretch from Nanu Oya, is often cited as one of the most scenic rail routes in the world โ€” winding through fourteen tunnels between Idalgashinna and Ohiya alone, past terraced tea estates, cloud forest, and the summit point of Sri Lanka's highest broad-gauge railway track near Pattipola, just beyond Ohiya.

Gateway to Horton Plains and World's End

Horton Plains National Park sits about 8km from Ohiya, and this is the shortest, most direct approach to the park of any nearby town. The plains are a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for their high-altitude cloud forest and open grassland โ€” unusual terrain for Sri Lanka, and one of the few national parks where visitors can walk freely rather than staying inside a vehicle.

The main draw is World's End, a sheer cliff with a roughly 1,200-meter (4,000-foot) drop-off and, on a clear day, panoramic views stretching toward the southern coast. The full loop hike also passes Baker's Falls and Chimney Pool, and is generally considered an easy-to-moderate walk suitable for most fitness levels.

Arrive early. Clouds and mist typically roll in over World's End by mid-morning, so a start before or around sunrise gives the best chance of clear views. Early arrival also means fewer crowds along the trail.

Wildlife and Scenery

Horton Plains is home to the Sri Lankan sambar deer, commonly seen grazing in the open grasslands, along with the elusive Sri Lankan leopard, though sightings are rare. Birdwatchers can look out for endemic species like the Sri Lanka blue magpie and dull-blue flycatcher, while the cloud forest itself โ€” draped in moss and mist โ€” has a character unlike anywhere else on the island.

Getting from Ohiya to Horton Plains

The short drive from Ohiya to the park entrance takes around 30โ€“45 minutes, climbing steeply through several sharp switchback bends. A dependable vehicle is genuinely useful on this stretch, since the road is steep and winding even though it's manageable for most cars and drivers with reasonable experience.

What Ohiya Itself Is Like

There's very little infrastructure directly in Ohiya โ€” accommodation options are basic, and most travelers base themselves instead in nearby Nuwara Eliya or Ella and visit Ohiya and Horton Plains as a day trip. For those who want a quieter, more immersive stay, a guesthouse in the immediate area offers genuine hill country tranquility, well away from more touristed towns.

Beyond Horton Plains

The wider Ohiya area also gives access to Bambarakanda Falls, Sri Lanka's tallest waterfall, along with numerous tea estates and smaller hiking trails suited to varying fitness levels. It's an easy add-on if you're already routing through the hill country toward Ella or Nuwara Eliya.

Getting There

While the train ride to Ohiya is a memorable experience in its own right, having your own vehicle in the surrounding hill country gives far more flexibility โ€” for reaching the Horton Plains entrance directly, exploring nearby tea estates, and continuing on to Ella, Nuwara Eliya, or beyond without waiting on train schedules.
